Mustachioed Men — Downtrodden Minority Group? (Updated — Limerick Revised)
Is the American Mustache Institute (AMI) for real? When I first read about it, I figured it must surely be fictitious. Either that … or John Bolton’s new employer. But the AMI, a sort of mustache anti-defamation league, apparently does exist, with this as its stated goal:
To battle negative stereotyping that has accompanied the mustache since those glory years of the 1970s – the peak of mustache acceptance – fighting to create a climate of acceptance, understanding, flavor saving, and upper lip warmth for all mustached Americans alike.
I think the American Mustache Institute deserves a limerick don’t you?
Ode to Mustached Men, The Forgotten Minority
By Madeleine Begun Kane
Ending prejudice—that’s the group’s aim.
“Don’t be bigots!” its members exclaim.
What’s the bias they face?
Not their age, faith or race—
Anti-mustache behavior’s to blame.

There is something to it. Villians have been clad with mustaches forever just as the good cowboy wears a white hat and the bad cowboy wears a black hat. The man with the mustache ties the woman to the railroad tracks in the old silent films. Cartoons often depict villans with mustaches.
Alot of sale organizations (especially MLM) will encourge a “clean shaven look” due to the images mustache clad men apparently conjure up such as the used car saleman.
I guess you’re right, PoliShifter, though I never think of mustaches as negative. In fact, my husband has a very cute one. :}
We are indeed for real and appreciate your careful examination of the real issues facing those of us – men and women – with mustaches who have faced severe discrimination over the past quarter century.
Never forget – a mustache is a terrible thing to waste!
I am unashamedly anti-mustache. ;-)
I loved this!
[…] Madeleine Begun Kane is feeling the pain of Mustachioed Men — Downtrodden Minority Group? Or perhaps it’s just that they’re scratching her face? […]
I question the validity and value of your poetry in modern society. I feel that the cause you are “fighting for” or at a minimum trying to be creative about lacks any sort of contribution to either academics or science. As a mustachioed man, I take offense to your quibling humour towards my life choice.
