Happy birthday, dear hubby! Have fun!
You’re the best husband under the sun!
And PLEASE don’t feel stiffed,
But this lim’rick’s my gift.
(Aren’t you happy you wed a “Begun?”)

Happy Birthday To My Great Husband Mark (Limerick)
Saturday, July 9th, 2022Birthday Limerick For My Dear Brother, Arthur
Wednesday, April 6th, 2022It’s your birthday, dear brother, so try
To have fun. (Maybe even get high.)
And I also must say
On this wonderful day:
How dare you be younger than I!
Birthday Limerick For Hubby Mark
Friday, July 9th, 2021Here’s a birthday limerick for my husband Mark, in response to his joking (I hope) query: “Mad, it’s my Birthday, and I’m feeling a bit down, so would it be OK if I visited our local ecdysiast?”
Happy birthday to Mark! You’re the best!
Though you’re old, you still live life with zest.
I am joking, of course;
If you’re old, I perforce
Am antique. (So no dancers undressed!)
Birthday Misadventure (3-verse Limerick)
Thursday, April 6th, 2017This is how my brother Arthur’s birthday began today, translated by me into a 3-verse limerick:
Loud sounds woke you up with a fright.
Did a drummer come visit at night?
Seems your exercise pool
Somehow drained. A mere drool
Of water is left. What a sight!
Even worse, it has emptied indoors,
And that noise is your pump at its chores.
Now you MUST figure out
How to stop it without
A bad shock. When it rains, it sure pours.
I’m so sorry your birthday began
In a manner you never would plan.
Happy birthday, dear bro!
I wrote this to show
There’s a way to make home mishaps scan.
Happy birthday, Arthur!
Happy Dewey Decimal Day! (Limerick)
Thursday, December 10th, 2015When I was a child (way, way, way before computers) I was fascinated by the Dewey Decimal System. How I loved perusing the sliding drawers of those beautiful wooden library cases! They were packed with tiny cards, key to my quest for the number that would lead me to a book’s aisle and shelf location.
So I feel compelled to celebrate Dewey Decimal Day with a limerick. (It’s observed each year on December 10th, in honor of the birthday of Melvil Dewey, inventor of the Dewey Decimal System.)
The U.S. librarian Dewey
Found our library book placement screwy.
“Shelve this system,” he said.
“Number topics instead!”
(So chop suey is near ratatouille.)
Note: Under this topical/numeric system, food books would generally fall into the 641 classification. Cooking and recipes would be 641.5, whereas “cooking specific kinds of composite dishes” would be 641.8.
A Birthday Limerick for my Husband Mark
Wednesday, July 9th, 2014A birthday limerick for my wonderful husband Mark, who turns an undisclosed age today:
Happy birthday, dear hubby — you’re old,
Although younger than I, truth be told.
No need for debate —
There is NO better mate.
So how do I know this? I polled.
Limerick Ode To Roget’s Thesaurus
Tuesday, April 29th, 2014Limerick Ode To Roget’s Thesaurus
By Madeleine Begun Kane
Serenade, sing, belt out, croon in chorus:
Happy Birthday to Roget’s Thesaurus,
Sterling word-meister’s brew,
Published Eighteen-Five-Two
In late April. The tome is a Taurus!
(Dr. Peter Mark Roget released his ground-breaking English-language word reference book, Roget’s Thesaurus, to the public on April 29, 1852.)
Limerick Ode To The ZIP Code
Monday, July 1st, 2013Happy birthday to the ZIP Code, born fifty years ago, on July 1, 1963.
Limerick Ode To The ZIP Code
By Madeleine Begun Kane
Today is the birthday of ZIP Codes–
Those digital sort and then ship codes
That help us get mail,
Which they’re now calling “snail.”
With email, these aren’t such hip codes.
Happy Birthday, Calvin Coolidge! (Limerick)
Wednesday, July 4th, 2012Happy Birthday to President John Calvin Coolidge, Jr. (July 4, 1872 – January 5, 1933)
Limerick Ode To Calvin Coolidge
By Madeleine Begun Kane
Calvin Coolidge — a man of few words:
He thought garrulousness for the birds.
But the ones that he spoke
Were quite pointed. No joke!
If just two words would do, then no thirds.
Happy 100th Birthday To The Girl Scouts (Limerick)
Monday, March 12th, 2012It’s hard to believe that the Girl Scouts is one century old. Happy centennial anniversary to the Girl Scouts!
Happy 100th Birthday To The Girl Scouts (Limerick)
By Madeleine Begun Kane
I hated the Brownies and Scouting.
They weren’t my thing — there’s no doubting.
But this verse is no jest:
My centennial best
To the Girl Scouts. Today is worth touting.
Happy Birthday Limerick For My Brother, Arthur Begun
Monday, April 5th, 2010April 6th is my brother Arthur Begun’s birthday. So I thought I’d write him a happy birthday limerick:
Happy birthday, dear brother, you’re old,
Though you’re younger than I, truth be told.
You’re a relative pup.
You refuse to catch up.
But as sibling, you’re better than gold.
Happy Birthday To Me
Sunday, September 13th, 2009Friday, September 11th was my birthday — one of those traumatizing, ends-with-zero birthdays. So I told my husband Mark that, unless he wanted me to be a basket case on nine-eleven, he’d better plan something good.
So, did Mark rise to the occasion? He sure did, as I describe in this three-verse limerick:
Happy Birthday To Me
By Madeleine Begun Kane
My nine-one-one birthday was great!
Hubby Mark planned a fabulous date:
God of Carnage — fine play —
Four fab stars on Broadway.
Yes, I married a wonderful mate.
The play featured James Gandolfini,
Who did not play a mafia meanie.
Hope Davis starred too
And Jeff Daniels. Woo Hoo!
Marcia Harden’s the fourth. Creds ain’t teeny.
We dined on gourmet Mex cuisine:
Toloache’s the best I have seen.
And we drank and we danced
At two bars. Age advanced?
Well, perhaps … but I felt sweet sixteen.
