Celebrate Anisette Day? Don’t Make Me! (Limerick)

Sunday, July 2nd, 2023

Though it’s Anisette Day, I don’t care.
I can’t bear any bev’rage or fare
With a licorice taste.
I would rather chew paste!
Me touch tarragon? Not on a dare!

(For some unfathomable reason, “National Anisette Day” is celebrated on July 2.)

Happy Yoga Day! (Limerick)

Wednesday, June 21st, 2023

This headline reminded me that today (June 21) is International Day Of Yoga: “International Yoga Day: PM Modi leads celebrations at UN Headquarters in New York”.

So it’s time for yet another yoga-related limerick:

I used to do yoga most days.
It was more than a health-conscious phase.
But I did it MY way;
Certain moves were a NAY
To avoid setting bad wrists ablaze.

Birding Gone Bad (Limerick)

Thursday, May 4th, 2023

I was birding alone in a park,
When it suddenly got rather dark;
Though the forecast was “clear,”
Rain and hail were now here.
This was NOT my idea of a lark.

(Happy “Bird Day” — May 4.)

Pardon My French! (Limerick)

Monday, March 20th, 2023

I used to speak French fairly well,
But my accent is no longer belle,
And my “je ne sais quoi”
Is reduced to a blah.
(That damn phrase is a struggle to spell!)

(Happy UN French Language Day! — March 20)

Limerick Ode To DST

Saturday, March 11th, 2023

If you live in a part of our nation
That creates DST irritation
Via forward or back
Clock adjustments, alack!
Spring ahead for some sleep deprivation!

Happy Proofreading Day! (Limerick)

Wednesday, March 8th, 2023

A limerick for National Proofreading Day:

It’s “National Proofreading Day,”
A reminder to keep flubs at bay.
Uncaught flaws in my verse
Are dismaying; I curse
At my lapses on shameful display.

A Cooked Up Complaint? (Limerick)

Thursday, February 9th, 2023

A lawyer whose molar was aching
Lambasted a bakery’s baking:
Said his tooth had been marred
By a dangerous shard—
A shakedown, methinks, in the making.

(National Toothache Day falls on February 9.)

Puzzling Limerick

Sunday, January 29th, 2023

It’s “National Puzzle Day,” which gives me a good excuse to post this limerick:

I never play Wordle in “hard mode.”
It feels like a feathered and tarred mode.
I would rather control
All my moves, on the whole.
It’s too bad they don’t offer a “bard mode.”

“Kazoo Day?” Why??? (Limerick)

Saturday, January 28th, 2023

I am NOT a big fan of kazoos.
The mere sound of one makes me think “Booze!”
What loser invented
That plaything demented?
Buzz off, cuz I’m getting the blues!

(Happy “National Kazoo Day,” if you insist.)

Limerick Ode To Pie Day

Monday, January 23rd, 2023

Dear pie-loving people, rejoice!
It’s “Pie Day,” a day to give voice
To your fondness for pie
And to tell us all why
You actu’lly eat it by choice.

(National Pie Day is celebrated on January 23.)

The Skeptical Troll (Limerick)

Friday, January 13th, 2023

A skeptical troll who delights
In arguing, often starts fights
On both Facebook and Twitter.
Ignore all his litter.
He gets bitter when nobody bites.

*****
International Skeptics Day is celebrated each year on the first Friday The 13th of the Year.

Happy “Word Nerd Day!” (Limerick)

Monday, January 9th, 2023

It’s “National Word Nerd Day.” Yay!
I’m a “word nerd.” It’s true. Ev’ry day
I try to learn new words,
Recalling but few words;
In my brain they’re reluctant to stay.

This and That

Tuesday, December 20th, 2022

As I’m walking to the library on a (usually) quiet street, I notice 2 trucks up ahead, one blocking the other. So naturally, the one being blocked, honks.

Hmmm, a FedEx driver honking at an Amazon driver.

Where’s Alanis Morissette when you need her?

*****

I just heard that today is “World Day of Skepticism.”

But I don’t believe it.

A Change Of Course (Limerick)

Tuesday, December 13th, 2022

A gal’s parents, upset, then joined forces
In condemning her new choice of courses.
“I’ll be learning collage,
Equine health and dressage.”
“Bad idea,” they nagged. “Please hold your horses.”

(December 13th Is National Day Of The Horse. )

The Violinist’s Plight (Limerick)

Tuesday, December 13th, 2022

A fellow who plays violin
Bears his neck pain with grace and a grin:
“Yes the problem is big,
But it comes with the gig;
I must take all my aches on the chin.”

(December 13th is National Violin Day.)

“Absurdity Day” Seems Absurd (Limerick)

Sunday, November 20th, 2022

Today’s “National Absurdity Day,” though I can’t imagine why.

To “Absurdity Day,” I say NAY!
Cuz the NON-absurd’s faded away.
The inane seems to reign,
And the world’s gone insane.
“Use Your Brain,” though, deserves its own day!

Fridge Madness (Limerick)

Tuesday, November 15th, 2022

I had some internal rhyme fun with this limerick. (Happy “National Clean Out Your Refrigerator Day!”)

When a woman attempted to cram
Her fridge with an over-sized ham,
Plus some lamb, SPAM, and yams,
Sev’ral jam jars and clams,
The door jammed on her very first slam.

Grand Shopping Plans (Limerick)

Monday, November 7th, 2022

When I priced grand pianos today,
I heard quotes, grandiose, with dismay.
They cost too many grand,
And my right and left hand
Lack the cash to buy keyboard cachet.

*****
Happy World Pianist Day! (November 8)

Sax Day Blues

Sunday, November 6th, 2022

A limerick in honor of National Saxophone Day:

A fellow was feeling distressed;
He was restless and NOT at his best.
So he pulled out his axe
And at midnight played sax.
As house-guests go, THAT guy’s a pest!

Donut Daze (Limerick)

Saturday, November 5th, 2022

A fresh donut was found in the grass,
Not yet fettered by insects en masse.
Who’d abandon a tasty
Sweet treat? Seems a hasty
Retreat must have caused this to pass.

National Donut Day a/k/a National Doughnut Day falls on two days a year: November 5 and the first Friday of June.
