Limerick Ode To Bad Poetry Day (August 18)
Limerick Ode To “Bad Poetry Day” (3-Verse)
By Madeleine Begun Kane
“Bad Poetry Day” is today,
But I’d rather keep bad verse at bay.
Writing poorly on purpose
Would seem to usurp us
And lead to poetic decay.
I contend that it’s hard to deny
We write badly enough when we try
To create something clever
Or sweet, or endeavor
To craft something witty or wry.
This very 3-verser of mine
Provides proof of my point. Ev’ry line
Should be thrown in the can.
But I just got a plan:
I shall claim that it’s bad by design.

Ha.. I remember reading about Vogon poetry.. poetry that is so bad that you simply cannot listen to it..
But Paula Nancy Millstone Jennings actually did Vogons.. this is an excerpt:
The dead swans lay in the stagnant pool.
They lay. They rotted. They turned
Around occasionally.
Bits of flesh dropped off them from
Time to time.
And sank into the pool’s mire.
They also smelt a great deal.
Ha! love it. The tone reminds me of Ogden Nash. It’s actually quite good but you set the expectation so low it makes it excellent. We should all celebrate bad poetry day!
I contend that it’s hard to deny
We write badly enough when we try
So true.. often when we try too hard.. we end up writing something which doesn’t quite add up.. and when we let ourselves go.. the words just start to flow. Beautifully executed :D
Lots of love,
Sanaa
I always enjoy your poems. I wish I could remember his name but there was a guy in the late 1800s titled the worst poet ever. I’ll have to check my husband’s trivia books. This poem is flat out fun,
:D I should sleep with this smile.
Nobody has an actual right to say
my lousy poetry ruined their damn day,
cuz this lame pot’s worst verse,
no matter how disjointed or terse,
could still make someone feel gay.
Witty and wry are the perfect words for this cri de coeur.
Glenn’s lines are also an apt commentary.
nice witty flow :)

So very true – and I hate it when I am not able to write.
Great fun :-)
Ha-ha! Pure wit! I really don’t get to these often enough, thanks Maddy!
