Limerick Ode To “I Forgot Day”

I almost forgot to write a limerick about “I Forgot Day.” It’s celebrated, if I remember to, on July 2nd.

Limerick Ode To “I Forgot Day”
By Madeleine Begun Kane

I nearly forgot “I Forgot Day.”
How ’bout naming it “Memory Rot Day?”
Since my brain is a sieve,
I find each day I live
A confounding “Forgetting A Lot Day.”

I was going to forget to recall
Whatever it was in the fall.
    Then came this reminder:
    My forgetting’s behinder
Than I thought it should be after all.

I must begin work on forgetting,
Or else I will end up regretting
    Whatever it was
    That should give me pause
When I visit that mem’rable setting.

I’m glad that my memory’s going,
Though my penchant for verse isn’t slowing,
    Because I find relief
    Instead of the grief
That I ought to feel if I were knowing.

    Forgetting is always a virtue,
For if someone’s misdeed should have hurt you,
    You forget to feel mad
    At that lummox or cad,
    Unless memory lapses desert you.

So let’s all celebrate “I forgot” Day.
It’s better than “No, I did not!” Day.
    Let’s write silly verses
    Instead of the curses
Preferred on “You bastard, you’re caught!” Day.

Just fwd’d both kooky but enchanting odes to “I Forgot Day” to 11 geezers. Do I owe royalties? Today is Bad-Luck Day…for Bill, anyway:

After leaving the racetrack, Bill bumped into his old pal Steve on the bus.
“Say,” Steve said, “How’s it going?”
“Going?” Bill said. “Tell me~~what’s today’s date?”
    “July 7th.”

“Right. The 7th day of the 7th month~~it’s my son’s 7th b.d. I go to the track at 7 minutes past 7. We live at 77-7th Ave.”

“Lemme guess,” Steve interrupted. “You put everything you had on the 7th horse in the 7th race.”

    “Right!”
“And he won?” Steve asked anxiously.
    “No~~he came in 7th.”

I loved the comparison of the brain to a sieve. A lot has been put on the table with the 5 lines. Brilliant. !

I’m impressed you even remembered! :)

I’ve actually gone into a room, forgotten what I’ve come in for, all the while carrying in my hands whatever it is I thought I needed! :) Yeah, my mind is like a colander with VERY large holes.

  5. I did not know there was such a thing as ‘I Forgot Day.’ I know now, but soon I will forget.

    Madeleine!

I am too busy to try to forget
Yet, rules to limerick get me upset
But a sure bet, I’ll say
To get dear Mad to pay
A visit to my blog later, I’ll bet!
