Not A-Mused (Limerick)
Not A-Mused (3-Verse Limerick)
By Madeleine Begun Kane
Inspiration is gone — I’m bereft,
For I fear my dear muse has just left.
And my brain’s auto-rhymer
Is spent — the old-timer
Says, “Write something rhyme-free with heft.”
A serious verse that’s rhyme-free?
I’m sorry — that just isn’t me.
I don’t layer my verse
Or deep meaning disperse.
I’d rather spread light-hearted glee.
If you’re waiting for metaphor, stop.
And a simile simply won’t pop.
My verse just won’t hatch
Without rhyme — that’s the catch:
An unfertilized limerick crop.

Nice one(s), Mad.
Mad, your muse is rocking the world :-) I like it just the way it is–the world needs all the light it can get, especially now–closing Yosemite to the public, but opening it to loggers, my head and heart are about to explode…
I really enjoy reading your poems. They always “spread light-hearted glee” :)
Nice, I think your muse is having a pretty good time.
It will come soon, worry not.
If you’re waiting for metaphor, stop. this line and below makes me smile, Thanks Madeleine
I understand those dry periods… They come, and thankfully, they go!
Isn’t it an annoying and frustrating feeling we have all encountered? I am glad the Muse comes back though.
ha. i read this one the other day…smiles.
dont try to hard, i think that chokes out the muse as well
usually i go for a walk and just watch the world
to find my flow again…
Limericks is all about having fun… and that is a really fun write. Certainly enjoyed it.

That’s a punch you’ve packed in. I admire your loyalty towards rhyme and verse. It’s often when we are constrained that we are most creative. Freedom in fetters is greater freedom than freedom itself.
A rhyme works best all the time.. and it inspires me…
I smiled all the way through this. I love it!
Many wonder how you slog thru each week~~rain, storm or b.d.~~& presto! at least 3 new Mad limericks. Most of us couldn’t write an engaging postcard from vacation~~once a year! Your topical limericks are the mostest. Thanx for lifting our spirits weekly. I’ll drink to that.
Thanks so much everyone for your lovely comments!
Know the feeling – I love rhyme. Love the notion of your brain’s auto-rhymer!

Ow, That’s hilarious…you never cease to amaze me. Great piece, as always.
Thanks everyone!
