Be Yourself?
Oscar Wilde famously (and amusingly) said, “Be yourself; everyone else is already taken.” So I thought I’d have some limerick fun with the “be yourself” advice:
Be Yourself?
By Madeleine Begun Kane
“Be yourself” is outstanding advice.
You’ve heard it, I’m sure, once or twice.
I’d advise you to take it.
It’s best not to fake it,
Assuming you’re someone who’s nice.

Well done! That is too funny.
Be yourself, that’s all you can do.
See yourself, from your own point of view.
Don’t follow the sheep,
and live your life half asleep.
Free yourself, and your dreams will come true.
Between me and myself’s a disparity.
Permit me to provide some clarity.
The impression I give’s
not the life that I live.
I’ve learned that you can fake sincerity.

Be Yourself
By Barbara Isard-Stone
Do you know who you are?
A flower, a tiger, or a tire…
Are you open like a daisy,
Or growling vociferously?
Rolling along like a ball in a tree?
Do you think and then act?
Know fiction from fact?
Are your dreams in a jar?
Talk outloud in your car?
Is your self acting kindly?
Do you like who you are?
Be yourself say the poets,
How you doin’ so far?
Wonderful verse and funny punchline, Barbara!
Wonderful verses.
Be yourself
and not just yourself
but your best self.
Love yourself
and not just your good self
but your entire self.
Listen to yourself
and not just when alone
but also when mobbed.
Protect yourself
and not just when you are down
but also when up.
Believe in yourself
and not just when succeeding
but also when failing.
